Tips For Deciding On Your Unique Style of Drawing

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

The first thing that you need to decide on is what kind of art style you have. You will be surprised to know that there are as many different kinds of art styles as there are artists. For instance, one artist's style may be called impressionism and another's would be Abstract Expressionists. So how do you identify yours? Read on to find out.

The type of art style that others can immediately recognize when they view your work. Unfortunately, for those of us who have not yet discovered our artistic styles, there's no easy, cut-and-dry method for discovering your art style. Instead, it's something that constantly changes and evolves as you journey along your creative path. However, there are ways to narrow down the possibilities as well as discover your inner artistic style.

One way to determine your artistic style is to look at the work of other artists. Look at examples of artwork from other areas of art such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, or any other style. For example, if you enjoy the work of cartoon and children's artists, chances are that you will also enjoy abstract and other non-traditional artists as well. By taking a good look at different kinds of art, you will be able to get a better idea of what you like.

You should also look at pictures of art styles that another artist has created. When you have a particular favorite artist, take time to talk to them about their work and see how well you agree with their style. For instance, if you enjoy the style of a painter who paints watercolor pictures, another artist will likely have a similar liking. You may not immediately like the style of paint but you will more than likely find a few paintings or drawings in magazines or books that capture your attention and match your painting style.

Another way to determine your art style is to study other artists. Look for examples of their work in magazines and books. Also, visit some of the local galleries and speak with several artisans to get their take on what their favorite artists do. If an artist only works in black and white, you are not likely to find too much variety in their work. But, if you like to see color mixed, you are more likely to have an appreciation for this type of artist. While you may not think you have a recognizable art style, many other artists share similarities with you.

Once you have a shortlist of possible identifiable art styles, you will need to make a more in-depth list of characteristics of each one. Take into consideration how similar each style or category is to your personal preferences. Are you drawn to watercolor or are bright colors to your preference? Once you have narrowed down your list to three styles, you can start making comparisons.

The third step to determining which art style best fits your personality is to take a closer look at the artists. Pay attention to what each artist does as you make comparisons. Is each style distinctively different from all of the others? If so, that artist might be your new favorite for sketching.

Finally, the fourth step to determining your art style is to look at the sketches you have created. Most artists will provide sketches of their most popular subjects. Look closely at how these sketches relate to your ideas. If there are certain aspects of an artist's style that reflect your tastes and interests, that artist's sketches might be your favorite for painting. Once you have found several artists that you enjoy, try to locate one or two artists whose style matches yours best.
